Food in its many forms, from creation, to harvest or capture, to preparation, to consumption is a dominant factor in our lives. Since visual art is also so much a reflection of life (realistically or in abstraction), it makes sense that food is a prevalent image recreated over and over again in countless compositional interpretations.
