The Sanctuary of Tanit was renamed the Tophet, after a biblical area of human sacrifice, because of ancient sources that associated the Carthaginians with the sacrifice of the children. However, the literary evidence for sacrifice is ambiguous and inconclusive.
The Tophet of Carthage has long been viewed as a place of child sacrifice. Reevaluation of written sources, however, and overwhelming physical evidence at the Tophet points to a graveyard for children.
