Studying History Through Art – Is it Accurate?

June 14, 2013 by Emily-Jane Hills Orford 1 Comment

This painting, The Death of General Wolfe by Benjamin West, depicts a real historical event, but the details are not all accurate. The painting is in the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.

Can the arts (all forms of creative expression) serve as a means to study history? Alan Gowans suggested that one cannot study the history of art without also studying the history in art. The arts and history are interlocked in both time and space.
