Both Benedictine monks and Cistercians gardened and farmed, but the emphasis was different. The monks nurtured the land of Europe, and produced things such as cheese and beer. Many of their products are still with us.

It started with a single gunshot. Next, the air was raked with rifle and cannon fire, leaving the field strewn with wounded and dead. Army medics raced out under fire, rescuing comrade and enemy alike, patching their wounds, and moving them to field hospitals for further treatment.
Hadrian the African – Early British Theologian and Scholar
Hadrian the African began as an infant refugee from North Africa, but later became Abbot of Canterbury in England. He was a theologian, a scholar, and a teacher, and he made a significant contribution to English Christianity. Hadrian rose to fame without seeking it.
